The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government has acquired a “mother”. Taking part in the debate on price rise in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, Congress Minister for Law and Justice Salman Khurshid said neither the Opposition nor his government had a magic wand to tackle the problem. What, however, the UPA government did have, and the Opposition did not have, was a “mother”. Even as the Opposition members wondered about the mystery of the mother, Khurshid explained that like the protagonist in the Hindi popular film, Deewar, the UPA government was fortunate to have a “mother”. And the “mother” to whom Khurshid was referring was none else than Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Khurshid explained that the difference was that while the UPA had Manmohan Singh to fight inflation, the Opposition had no one like Singh. A visibly pleased Singh, who was present in the House, could not hide a smile.
