Protests at India Gate and Raisina Hill last weekend put five-star hotels in central Delhi on alert. Many of these hotels put up barricades at the main entrance and allowed entry to visitors coming on foot only after asking the purpose of their visit. The reason for this extra caution, it turned out, was that many protesters tried to take shelter in these hotels after the police chased them with lathis, water cannons and tear gas shells.
