Put a price on water

The government should take up the issue of interlinking of rivers

With reference to the editorial, “The heat is on” (April 5), water is the elixir of life. It is integral to public administration. Water should be made a national commodity so that no one other than the central government has any right over it or can fight for it. Water is largely a free commodity; that must change to ensure full cost recovery. There should be differential pricing to check excessive consumption. 

Even after 69 years of independence, the country is heavily dependent on monsoons. The government should take up the issue of interlinking of rivers. Let’s not make the water scarcity situation any worse.
