Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union President Kanhaiya Kumar, a member of the Communist Party of India-backed All India Students Federation, has not only left the Left cadres inspired, but has also enthused many in the beleaguered Congress party. Earlier, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor made an offer to Kumar to join the party.

Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had Kumar's face splashed across election posters in the run-up to the Assembly polls in the state.
