Tax officials have been burning the midnight oil since November 8, when demonetisation began, with the intent of nabbing black money hoarders. They have been monitoring high-value deposits in bank accounts and making such taxpayers explain the source of their cash. Besides late night duties, tax officials are said to be sacrificing their weekends and holidays. They were working over the three-day weekend that began on Good Friday, busy preparing an action plan to identify tax evaders. When asked why they were working so hard, a senior official replied, “Government servants are working on holidays for the betterment of the nation.”
