Dr A Duraiswamy, the Director of the Ozone Cell in the environment ministry, gave the vote of thanks at the conference on ozone depleting substances in the capital. Since the UNDP had done a lot of work, he spent some time thanking all those involved in the work and, since there were several women in the team, he spoke about the good work women were doing — not just in the UN but in other places as well. As he put it, “There is adam in madam, Mr in Mrs, man in woman, he in she, he in her, male in female, lad in lady.” The conclusion he drew, though, was open to misinterpretation — “forever man has wanted to get inside the woman”.
