The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) adopted two resolutions at its national executive meeting here.

The first, a political resolution, congratulates Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley for ensuring passage of the goods and services tax (GST), and for presenting a ‘pro-poor budget’.

Crediting the PM for the party’s emphatic wins in recent state assembly polls, the resolution said Modi had emerged as the most popular leader in independent India.

The second resolution complimented the government’s effort on a statutory National Commission for Socially and Educationally Backward Classes. It also slams opposition parties for blocking the passage of a constitution amendment Bill in this regard in the Rajya Sabha.

The move for statutory status is an effort by the BJP to consolidate support among the other backward classes (OBCs), after the Uttar Pradesh assembly poll success. In his speech at the meet, the PM said the new Commission would benefit all classes listed under the OBC category, which spanned religions.
