Rubbishing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "Shoot me" statement as a "poll gimmick", the Congress urged the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government at the centre to stop this "Dalit tokenism" as people are wise enough to see through their drama.

Congress leader Renuka Chowdhury said, "I don't know whether to laugh or cry. I am glad that everybody has become a Dalit Premi (lover). The point is, when we talk like this, saying that we care so much for the Dalits; are you really doing them the service by saying we care for Dalits?"

"So, don't do this Dalit tokenism and think that Dalits are people, who don't have intelligence to see through this drama. Just because you say this, people are not going to vote for you, it doesn't happen that way," Chowdhury stated.

"It is the most oppressed class of people and it's a kind of exploitation, if we are still talking that you know 'shoot me' and do this to me or that to me but not to your Dalit brothers because you are close by to an election," Chowdhury told ANI.

"It's an exploitation of a different kind. And, that's the worst disservice you can do to people, please don't do this," she added.

Chowdhury asked the government, if they really care for the Dalits, then stop atrocities on them.
