Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences held a workshop on one of the enigmas of modern interventional cardiology, i.e., Chronic Total Occlusion or CTO on the 19th June, 2011.This was organized as a part of EIICCON, a conclave of interventional cardiologists from Eastern India, where about 300 delegates from Eastern India and neighboring SAARC countries will join to exchange scientific knowledge.
CTO constitutes 10-20% of all angioplasty procedures. ‘TO’, means total blockage of a segment of a coronary artery with fibrous tissue and calcium. Such lesion is very difficult to deal with and requires commendable skill and support of most modern equipments like IVUS and Rotablator. In less experienced hands and less equipped cath labs, angioplasty of CTOs is associated with lower success rates.
World renowned and famous cardiologist Dr. Joji Hosokawa, Director of Tokyo Heart Centre and an acclaimed Interventional Cardiologist recognized world-wide as one of the masters in CTO angioplasty visited the cath lab to perform angioplasty on the CTO’s. This is the first time that an internationally famous CTO Expert has chosen a cath lab in Eastern India to perform such a complex case. The very fact that he has performed at the RTIICS cath lab speaks of the highest standard maintained by it and the state of the art instruments that it uses.
