Manipal University bags Golden Peacock for Environment Management

Manipal University, Manipal bagged the Golden Peacock Environment Management Award for the year 2012. Dr Karan Singh gave away the award during the 14th World Congress on Environment Management in Hotel Le Meridian, New Delhi on July 7, 2012, according to a release from the university.

This is yet another milestone in the pioneering efforts of Manipal University.

Earlier, on January 22, 2012 Dr. Ramdas M Pai, Chairman Manipal Education and Medical Group was awarded the Golden Peacock Lifetime Achievement Award for the Year 2011 in recognition of his immense contributions in the fields of education and healthcare.

A jury chaired by Justice P. N. Bhagwati, former Chief Justice of India and Member, UN Human Rights Commission selected Manipal University for the award.  Pro Chancellor of the University, Dr H.S.Ballal, Director General Services, Col Badri Narayanan and the environment executive, Derrick Joshua received the award. The Award is given in recognition of the excellence in Environment Management. It is to recognize the success achieved in managing environmental concerns.

About the award: Golden Peacock Awards, instituted by Institute of Directors in 1992, are now regarded as Holy Grail of Corporate Excellence worldwide. Today Golden Peacock Awards Secretariat receives over 1,000 entries per year for various National and Global awards, from India and over 25 countries worldwide.

The Golden Peacock Environment Management Award (GPEMA) instituted by the World Environment Foundation in 1998 is conferred annually. The unique feature of the World Environment Foundation (WEF), among its other aims and objectives of working in the field of conservation and development, is that it seeks to create awareness of and implement strategies for improving environmental management standards.

The emphasis is on development, management and on countrywide awareness of duties of government, corporations, voluntary sector and individuals to maintain ecological balance by minimizing adverse environmental impact. To this end, the WEF instituted GPEMA to promote best strategy and management of environ mental issues by organizations.

This award is presented to organizations that have attained significant achievements in the field of Environment Management.
