The mudslide hit the Jinping hydropower station in Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture from late Wednesday night to early yesterday morning, sources with the provincial emergency response office said.
Rescue work is underway, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
Liangshan prefecture lies about 1,750 kilometers southwest of China's capital Beijing.
