"There were two girls and two boys on the spot with agitated locals claiming that a prostitution racket was being run. We decided to bring them to the police station for questioning. However, locals thought that police were shielding them and resorted to stone pelting. Some of them also attacked policemen with sticks," a police official said.
"The two couples claimed that they were known to each other and had come to meet while the locals were convinced that they were involved in illegal activities and tried to attack them. We tried to save them and bring them to the police station to ascertain the facts but the crowd turned violent," said a senior police official.
