12 elephants to be relocated to Corbett from Karnataka

Twelve domesticated elephants are likely to be relocated soon from Karnataka to Uttarakhand's Corbett Tiger Reserve to beef up security ofbig cats along the southern boundary of the sanctuary which is porous.
The permission for relocating the elephants to Corbett has been obtained from Karnataka Government, the Zoo Authority of India and the Forest and Environment Ministry paving the way for their relocation, CTR Director Samir Sinha said.
Normal vehicular patrolling is sometimes not adequate to ensure safety of tigers at CTR especially its southern boundary. These elephants are going to be of immense help in the exercise, Sinha said.

With the relocation of 12 elephants currently kept at different camps in Karnataka the number of domesticated and tamed pachyderms at Corbett will rise to 18 which will boost efforts by the reserve administration to strengthen safety of tigers along the park's sensitive southern boundary which is porous, he said.
