Two alleged gangsters were killed and their three associates wounded after their rival gang members opened fire on them on the outskirts of the city today, police said.
Harpreet Singh alias Subedar, resident of Mustaffapur Jattan, and Sulkhan Singh, resident of Sahngalpura mohalla here, were killed and their associates Daman, Happy and Prince suffered bullet injuries when the other gang, led by Vicky Goundar, opened fire on them, police said.
The incident took place when they were returning to village Aulakh after attending a court hearing.
The injured were admitted to civil hospital here and one of them, Happy, was referred to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital Amritsar.
Police have registered a case against Vicky Goundar, Sukha, Happy, Giana and their unidentified accomplice who managed to escape after committing crime.
The assailants who came in a car were waiting for them under a bridge and they opened fire from close range and escaped, police said.
The deceased Harpreet Singh was wanted in a number of criminal cases.
An old rivalry between the two gangs was motive behind the killing, police said.
