Two faculty members and a law student of the Punjab University were arrested today for alleged links to a banned Islamist group, a week after a Professor was held for his association with the same outfit.
In the early hours of this morning a team of a premier intelligence agency and Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) of Punjab raided two hostels of the Punjab University here and arrested Assistant Professor Amir Saeed of the Institute of Administrative Sciences, Lecturer Umer Nawaz of the PU College of Information Technology and law student Waqas Zulfiqar.
"All three have been arrested in connection with their links with Hizbut Tahrir," a CTD official told PTI.
He said the suspects have been detained at an undisclosed location for interrogation.
The arrests come after last week Assistant Professor Dr Ghalib Ata of Institute of Administrative Sciences was arrested for actively taking part in the activities of Hizbut Tahrir.
"The three suspects used to preach the ideology of Hizbut Tahrir which is staunch opponent of democracy and wants establishment of Caliphate in the country," the official said.
Security agencies have launched a crackdown across the country against Hizbut Tahrir.
Recently the Karachi chapter chief of Hizbut Tahrir was also arrested.
"We have directions from the higher authorities to have zero tolerance for Hizbut Tahrir's activities," the official said.
