The attack in the early hours of Thursday, allegedly by Vanniyars, was a fall-out of a clash between the two communities on the eve of the April 24 Lok Sabha polls over cavassing of votes, sources said.
Deputy Tahsildhar T Arunachalam said that fearing attack, some Dalit families left the Dalit colony at Vadakku Mangudi village.
Chidambaram police inspector Muruganandham said some Vanniyars had entered the colony, destroyed motor cycles and looted many houses. Six dalits were injured in the attack, and hospitalised, he said.
A case has been registered against 50 persons and 27 persons were arrested, police said.
Police are maintaining tight vigil in the area.
