Three students of Aligarh Muslim University have been suspended for their alleged involvement in a clash in which a former vice president of AMU Students' Union was injured.
The university administration has ordered a probe into the clash at Aftab Hall last week. Role of the three students into the clash will also be probed.
According to the official notification, the three students were suspended yesterday and the campus and its institutions have been declared "out of bound" for them.
A senior University official on condition of anonymity said that the clash took place between two warring regional groups of Azamgarh and Ghazipur districts, from where a large number of students are studying at AMU.
Former vice president of AMU Students' Union, Tausif Alam, who is known to lead "Azamgarh group", was assaulted and wounded on Friday night while he was in a hostel room in Aftab Hall.
He was rushed to the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College hospital where a large number of his supporters soon gathered.
When University Proctor, Prof Jamshed Siddiqui, arrived at the Hospital he was surrounded by the angry students and allegedly manhandled.
Late last night, students belonging to the other group gathered at the Sir Syed gate and held a demonstration against suspension of the three belonging to their group.
A police team led by the Circle Officer (Civil Lines) rushed to the spot and managed to defuse the situation.
