The accident happened at around 7 PM when a North Bengal State Transport Corporation (NBSTC) bus was going to Baxirhat from Siliguri.
According to the NBSTC bus conductor, Badal Sarkar, at Deocharai Morh suddenly a truck came in front of the bus and the collision took place.
Three persons including the driver of the bus, Shubhendu Nath Das (36) were killed on the spot. Two women identified as Tripti Saha (50) and Usha Rani Deb (47) also died on the spot, Tufanganj SDO, Manish Verma said.
A pall of gloom descended on Sokhda village after the news of the death of 14 persons came in.
Their bodies were brought to the village this afternoon. A large number of people paid their last respect to the deceased. All the fourteen bodies were cremated simultaneously.
Meanwhile, the Gujarat government announced compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the kin of each of those killed in the mishap.
"It is a very sad incident. We will pay Rs 4 lakh each to the kin of those who died in the accident," state Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said.
