They were part of an eight member group from Coonoor and surroundings in Nilgiris district, who had all ventured into the the river near Bhadrakaliamman temple, police said.
The three were sucked into the deep end and drowned.
Fire and rescue service personnel rushed to the spot on being informed and were trying to retrieve the bodies, police said.
