The number of those filing nomination papers was likely to go up as reports from the constituencies were pouring in till 8.30 PM and would go on till late in the night, the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) office said.
Among those who filed their nomination papers was BJP chief ministerial candidate and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal from Majuli, the office said.
Voting would be held for 65 of the 126 Assembly constituencies spread across Barak Valley, the two hill districts of Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong, besides upper Assam in the Brahmaputra Valley.
The last date for filing nominations is March 18, the next day is the date for scrutiny and March 21 is the last date for withdrawal of candidature.
