34-year-old man arrested for cheating

A 34-year-old hair-dresser, who had cheated his customers of Rs 40 lakh on the promise of getting good returns by investing in online business, was arrested today in Tirunelveli district, police said.
Velmurugan, a B A graduate and a native of Aalwarkurichi, had settled at Thingal Nagar in Kanyakumari district and was running his shop for the past 12 years.
He had lured his customers over the years by telling them that he earned good profit by investing in online business. Believing him, his customers who included doctors, police and other professionals had given him Rs 40 lakh to invest in the business, police said.

However, they grew suspicious when they found the shop locked a few weeks ago and searched for the man and his family who could not be traced. They lodged a complaint with the Superintendent of Police, Kanyakumari on May 29.
Based on this, the Crime Branch team led by DSP, Chinnaiah arrested Velmurugan this morning.
