The construction of four new border haats designated along the Indo-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya is delayed pending a joint inspection of officials from both the countries, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma said today.
"The constructions of the new border haats could not be started as a joint inspection of the sites with Bangladeshi officials is yet to be conducted," Mukul told the Assembly during Question Hour today.
He said officials from that country have been repeatedly postponing the dates of inspection for which the construction could not be taken up.
India and Bangladesh have approved setting up of four more border haats along the Indo-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya aimed at increasing bilateral trade between the two countries and improving border residents' living conditions.
Of the approved haats, two would be in East Khasi Hills - Bholaganj and Ryngku - and one each in South West Khasi Hills (Nolikata near Ranikor) and South Garo Hills (Sibari), Mukul said.
According to the Chief Minister, the matter has been brought to the notice of the Centre and they have assured to take up the issue with Bangladesh.
Two border haats are in operation in the state at Kalaichar in South West Garo Hills district and Balat in East Khasi Hills district.
