Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said in response to a question that 2,476 foreigners were convicted under the Foreigners Act in 2016, 1,442 in 2015 and 1,845 in 2014, totalling to 5,763.
Replying to another question, Rijiju said 1,72,536 visas were issued to Pakistani citizens during 2014-15; 14,03,963 visas were issued to Bangladeshi citizens during the same period.
Under Section 14 of The Foreigners Act, 1946, a person can be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to five years and shall also be liable to fine for remaining in India for exceeding the period for which the visa was issued.
