5 GNLA activists surrender

Five Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) rebels, mostly teenagers, surrendered with huge cache of arms and ammunition in Meghalaya's North Garo Hills district early today, police said.
Those who gave themselves up also deposited arms and ammunition in Bajengdoba Police Station.
"Five hardcore GNLA militants surrendered in Bajengdoba PS limits early today and they have brought along with them a huge cache of arms and ammunition," district SP J F K Marak told PTI.
They have been identified as Tengbart M Marak, Griksang B Marak, Chanang K Marak, Loban M Sangma and Nikrak M Sangma belonging to a group headed by one Jongman, he said.
The rebels also surrendered a US carbine with two magazines and 100 bullets, two 7.65 pistol with two magazines and nine bullets and a wireless set, the SP said.
While three of them are teenagers, the other two claimed they are 20-year old as all of them look barely 16-17 years, another police official said.
The GNLA banned for its unlawful activities in the Garo Hills region bore the brunt of counter-insurgency operation of the police code-named 'Hill Storm operation'.
Launched in the first week of July, 'Operation Hill Storm' is yielding results with at least 15 camps of the GNLA busted in the jungle besides several cadre getting arrested, Inspector General of Police (Operations) G H P Raju said.
The GNLA was considered a militant outfit and banned by the Centre in 2012.
