60,000 community forest right claims approved: Govt

The Centre has recognised over 60,000 community forest right claims from various state governments till November, 2017 against more than one lakh claims received by it in this regard, the parliament was informed today.
In a written reply, Minister of State for Tribal Affairs, Sudarshan Bhagat told the Rajya Sabha that under the Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition of Forest Rights) Act, 2006, Community Forest Rights (CFR) are recognised on the basis of claims received and admitted following due process.
"As per the information received from state governments till November 30 last year, 64,328 CFR claims have been recognised in the country against a total of 1,39,26 CFR claims," the minister said.
Sharma said most of these CFR claims have been received from Madhya Pradesh (39,419) followed by Chhattisgarh (27,548) and Odisha (13,062).
He added that the tribal ministry has written to principal secretaries of those states identified as "low performing", seeking justification of their current status and asking them to suo moto review the rejected claims to ensure that no wrongful rejections were made.
