Amid accommodation shortage for MPs, 72 new flats would be constructed for the parliamentarians in the national capital's Lutyens' Zone.
Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan stressed the need for more residential facilities for Members of Parliament (MPs) while speaking at a foundation stone laying function of three towers of total 72 flats for MPs here at BD Marg.
"On one side there is need for more accommodation for sitting MPs, but at the same time we need to consider about former MPs if they travel to Delhi or need some accommodation for some time. So more space is required," Mahajan said.
The Speaker also suggested naming of these upcoming three towers after holy rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati.
Speaking at the event, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar said more flats can be constructed by redeveloping the bungalows which have been lying vacant.
"As the number of former MPs is increasing, there is need for more residential space. I will request you so don't stop here and redevelop such bungalows which are lying vacant for construction of these flats as more MPs can get accommodation," Kumar said.
Both, the Speaker and the Minister, suggested that the construction of these flats should be done in environment-friendly manner.
The function was also attended by members of House Committee of Parliament, including its Chairman Suresh Chanabasappa Angadi.
