760 candidates in fray for zilla parishad in Punjab

A total 760 candidates in zilla parishad and 5,786 candidates in panchayat samities are left in the fray for the May 19 local bodies polls in Punjab after scrutiny today.
Out of the 760 candidates, 30 have been elected unopposed, a spokesman of the state election commission said adding that symbols have been alloted to the candidates.
1,321 candidates had filed their nomination for 331 zones in 22 zila parishads.
During scrutiny, 127 nominations were rejected while 404 candidates withdrew on the last day, the spokesman said.
For panchayat samiti elections, he said, nomination papers of 351 out of a total of 10,085 candidates were found to be incomplete.
As many as 3,719 persons withdrew their nominations, while 229 candidates have been elected unopposed, he added.
