87 state-run primary schools have no electricity: Gujarat govt

Gujarat government today admitted in the State Assembly that at least 87 state-run primary schools have been functioning without an electricity connection.
Congress MLA Tejashree Patel raised several questions related to the lack of basic amenities in the state-run primary schools, answers to which were put on the table of the State Assembly by the government.
Through her written questions, Patel sought details about the schools that were functioning without electricity, those without pucca structures and also those lacking toilet facilities for students.
In his separate written replies submitted before the House, state Education Minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama admitted that as many as 87 government-run primary schools in the state do not have any electricity connection.

Among these, Kutch district has 18 such schools, followed by Dahod (17), Porbandar(12), Vadodara(11) and others. Apart from Kutch, all others are tribal districts.
On a query about the schools without toilet facilities, the minister said 19 primary schools in the state are functioning without them.
Further, replying to a sub-question, the minister stated that 57 schools in the state do not have separate toilet facilities for boys and girls.
In response to the query about the schools that do not have pucca classrooms, Chudasama admitted that 30 schools in 9 different districts are operating without firm classroom structures. The minister also assured that government will construct the classrooms as soon as possible.
