The Special Cell of Delhi Police today arrested nine alleged gangsters who they claimed were trying to intimidate voters ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections.
According to police, all the accused are members of the Neeraj Bawana-Amit Bhura gang and wanted to ensure that the Congress candidate from Mundka, Reeta Shokeen, won the polls by "intimidating and influencing" the voters.
Police said that Reeta is Bawana's maternal aunt and the latter had asked his associates to ensure her victory in the upcoming polls.
Police said that following a tip-off, the accused were arrested from the main Delhi-Rohtak road this morning. They have been identified as Manjit, Rahul, Ajay, Ajeet Singh, Kuldeep, Manjit Antil, Narender Antil, Ajay Kumar and Parvesh.
"Inputs were received that members of the gang regularly visited the area of Mundka in Outer Delhi to extort money from local businesses as well as to intimidate the voters and rivals into submission in favour of the candidate belonging to the family of the gangster," said DCP (Special Cell), Sanjeev Kumar Yadav.
Yadav also said that a total of five firearms and two four -wheelers were recovered from the possession of the accused. With their arrests, a determined effort to disrupt free and fair polls has been successfully averted, he added.
