Senior diplomat A Gitesh Sarma has been appointed as Secretary (West), Ministry of External Affairs, according to an official order issued Thursday.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved his appointment to the post, the Personnel Ministry said in the order.
Sarma, a 1986-batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service, has been appointed to the post in place of Ruchi Ghanashyam. He is at present additional secretary in the foreign ministry.
Ghanashyam was named secretary (west) in February last year. She was last month appointed India's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
As the Secretary (West), Sarma will be responsible for the country's diplomatic affairs with the UK and other European nations.
