An agitation by standing in river water to protest raising the water level of the Omkareshwar Dam across the Narmada river from 189 metres to 191 metres, today received support from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) here.
AAP activists including women and students stood in a lake in the Pipaliya area of the city since today morning to 5 pm, in order to express solidarity with the ongoing Jal Satyagraha agitation, which entered its tenth day, in Khandwa district, local AAP spokesperson Hemant Joshi told reporters.
AAP and Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) leader Alok Agrawal said that the agitation in which more than 20 people took part would continue until the government rehabilitated those displaced by the Omkareshwar Dam.
The BJP-led state government has defended raising the dam's height claiming that it would enhance irrigation and power generation capacities as well as benefit farmers. It also claims that people displaced by the dam have been "abundantly compensated".
