Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) today joined the 'jal satyagraha', jointly launched by people affected by Omkareshwar dam project and Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) activists at Ghogalgaon village in the district.
Seeking adequate compensation for their submerged land and lowering of water level in the dam, the project-affected people and NBA activists launched jal satyagraha on April 11 by standing in knee-deep water of the dam.
AAP Madhya Pradesh coordinator Alok Agrawal today joined the protest.
The Omkareshwar dam is being constructed on river Narmada in Khandwa district, and protesters allege that filling the reservoir till the height of 191 metres have submerged their land.
Terming the decision to fill the reservoir till 191 metres as "inhuman", Agrawal announced that his party would stage a protest across the state on the issue on April 15.
Demanding special package for the people affected by dam in the Narmada valley, Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Arun Yadav said he would also join the agitation.
"I have been struggling for the rights of the dam affected persons and will also join the Jal Satyagraha," Yadav told PTI at Barwaha before heading to Ghogalgaon.
Meanwhile, Khandwa Collector Mahesh Agrawal said adequate compensation has already been given to the affected people by the government.
"If the agitators still have any grievances then they should come out of the water and hold discussions with the Narmada Hydro Development Corporation (NHDC) officials," Agrawal said, adding the water level will be maintained at 191 metres in the Omkareshwar dam.
