The man, who slapped Mamata Banerjee's nephew and TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee, was today booked for 'attempt to murder', even as police identified him as an active member of ABVP having direct connection with RSS leaders.
On the other hand, the police invoked milder charges against those who lynched Debashis Acharya, who was admitted to a state-run hospital in a serious condition.
Acharya (23) was arrested today after a case under 120B, 307, 323, 343, 447 and 506 of the IPC was registered against him for attacking the MP.
The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), meanwhile, denied that the youth who attacked Banerjee was a member of the organisation.
Inspector-General of Police (Law and Order) Anuj Sharma told reporters here that Acharya had been attracted to religious spiritualism and had criminal antecedents.
"Besides, the 23-year-old youth, a resident of Tamluk in East Midnapore district, has close link with a right-wing political organisation," Sharma said.
The IGP said that three cases were registered today in connection with the attack on the TMC MP.
The first case has been registered against Acharya for assault on the MP under IPC 120B (Criminal Conspiracy), 307 (attempt to murder), 323 (voluntary causing hurt), 343 (wrongful confinement) , 447 (criminal trespass) and 506 (criminal intimidation).

Acharya was chargesheeted in a case of attack on a first year student of Berachampa Acharya J C Bose Polytechnique College in 2012 in North 24-Parganas district, he said.
The youth was also present in a conference of the ABVP recently, which was organised at Srirupa cinema hall at Contai, the IGP said.
A leaflet recovered by the police also disclosed that Acharya had attended a programme of the ABVP at Suri in Birbhum district as East Midnapore district president of the organisation recently, Sharma said adding that Acharya's father also admitted to this.
Attending doctors at the Tamluk Hospital said that Acharya was in a critical condition after he suffered multuple injuries on his head and body and that he was slipping in and out of unconsciousness.
Meanwhile, three of Acharya's companions - Tamal Pallab, Sukhen Das and Surajit Bera - who were detained for questioning were allowed later to leave, East Midnapore district SP Sukesh Jain said.
The three were stated to have accompanied Acharya at the rally.
