Seventeen Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs), including Coal India Ltd, are working without their respective Chairmen and Managing Directors.
"Out of the total 64 Schedule 'A' and 68 Schedule 'B' CPSUs, the post of CMD is vacant in nine Schedule 'A' and 1- Schedule 'B' CPSUs," Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions Jitendra Singh told Lok Sabha in a written reply.
Out of these 19 vacancies, a conscious decision has been taken not to fill up two vacancies of CMDs at present. "Thus, there are effectively 17 vacancies of CMDs," he said.
The vacancies of CMD exist in Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL), Airport Authority of India, Coal India Limited, Power Finance Corporation Limited, National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC) and Metals and Minerals Trading Corporation of India Limited (MMTC), the Minister said.
"The filling up of posts is a continuous process. At any point of time, some vacancies may exist because some of them may be unanticipated. The government has taken several steps to fill up the vacant posts in public sector undertakings," Singh said.
All CPSUs are required to be categorised into four schedules, namely, Schedule 'A', Schedule 'B', Schedule 'C' and Schedule 'D'.
The categorisation has implications mainly for organisational structure and salary of Board-level incumbents of the concerned CPSU.
