After a massive manhunt across various states and Nepal for the past three years, Kerala Police today arrested an absconding accused, who had stabbed to death a policeman and grievously injured another at Kollam in 2012.
The accused Antony Varghese alias Aadu Antony, who is wanted in at least 100 cases, was picked up by police from Gopalapuram on the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border in the wee hours of today from a house of one of his many wives.
The accused had been on the run after he stabbed to death Maniyan Pillai, who tried to stop him when he tried to escape after grievously wounding a senior police officer on June 26, 2012.
The incident occurred at Kollam when police had stopped a suspicious vehicle and were conducting a search.
Special team of police personnel had been formed to nab the accused soon after the incident.
Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala was all praise for the policemen who finally managed to nab the accused.
The accused will be brought to Kollam soon, he told reporters.
Describing the arrest as "an important achievement for the police", DGP T P Senkumar said Special Branch DYSP Sunil Kumar led team had nabbed the accused, who was involved in several cases. The team had been monitoring the case for the past one year.
Maniyan Pillai's wife said she was happy that finally the accused had been arrested.
