Police in Guangdong Province said 28-year-old Li Mengjun was recaptured near Beijiang Prison in Shaoguan City, at about 2:30 pm, the provincial prison management bureau said in a statement, without elaborating.
Li and another inmate attempted escape from the Beijiang Prison yesterday.
He managed to escape, however, the other inmate was knocked down by the prison's electrified wire netting and was recaptured at the scene, state-run Xinhua reported.
Local police and paramilitary officers launched a manhunt and set up blocks on nearby roads to help capture Li.
Before he fled incarceration, he had 19 years and nine months of his sentence remaining.
This is second jailbreak incident reported in less than two months.
In early September, three inmates escaped from a detention center after killing a guard in the northeastern Chinese province of Heilongjiang.
