DMDK, an ally of BJP in Tamil Nadu, today urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to accord priority for linking rivers to alleviate the sufferings of rain deficit and flood-prone states.
"While states in north India have witnessed floods and resultant losses, several states face drought situation," DMDK founder president Vijayakanth said in a letter to Modi.
"As you are aware, the only solution to the problem of excessive and deficit rainfall is linking rivers", he said.
Referring to the infrastructure projects pursued during the previous NDA tenure, he said the Modi-led regime should give priority for linking rivers and get the project implemented quickly.
BJP leader H Raja, who has been appointed as one of the national secretaries of the party, had on August 16 told reporters at Vellore in the state that "the government would take up the river-linking project across the country by next year."
The Centre had already allotted Rs 100 crore for a study of the rivers-linking project and it was expected to be completed in six months, he had stated.
