The Kerala Academy for Skills Excellence (KASE) has opened the admission process for new design institute, the Kerala State Institute of Design (KSID) in Kollam district, with the release of its prospectus today.
Minister for Labour and Skills Shibu Baby John handed over the first copy of the prospectus of KSID to National Institute of Design (NID) Bangalore vice chairperson Susanth C S at a function held here.
Director of Employment and Training A Shainamol IAS, and KASE Managing Director Rahul R were among those attended the function.
The institute, which comes under the state government's apex skill development agency KASE, is located in Chandanathope in the outskirts of Kollam district.
It aims to create highly skilled design professionals and also produce a "made in Kerala" brand, with part of the syllabus planned with particular attention to using the state's natural resources, particularly in the handicrafts and handloom sectors.
The institute aims to attract the best talent from around the country, whose options are now limited to the NIDs in Ahmedabad and Bangalore.
"We aim to make this an exemplary institute nationally, and gradually also internationally," said Baby John. "We have received faculty and curriculum support from the prestigious NIDs, and hopefully can also look forward to an affiliation with them", he added.
The institute offers 10 seats each for its three PG design diploma courses in Integrated Product Design, Integrated Textile and Apparel Design, and IT Integrated Communication Design, with the academic year scheduled to begin in mid-July.
