Akhilesh, who was chairing a review meeting here, asked the policemen to be prompt and reach to the incident spots as soon as they get information.
"In order to change perception of the people (towards police) and instilling confidence among them, it is essential that the functioning of policemen, specially at the chowki and thana levels, be monitored," Akhilesh said here.
The chief minister also asked officials to provide factual details to the media promptly in case of any incident, and warned of action against rumour mongers and criminals.
Stressing immediate improvement in the functioning of police stations, he said the police department will be provided with an advanced apparatus for an effective vigilance.
Akhilesh also underscored the need for use of technology in the police functioning, and directed for time-bound recruitment to ensure the department does not face staff crunch.
