Amartya Sen concerned over issue of elitism in higher edu

With the West Bengal government trying its best to revive the lost glory of Presidency University, Nobel laureate Amartya Sen today subtly raised the issue of elitism in the higher education sector. "There is also a question of elitism. There has been qualitative improvement in one or two places like Presidency or Jadavpur University," Sen said questioning whether it was justified. "There has to be a high level education. There are many problems of different kinds. I am not going to go into all that," he said at a book launch here. The economist is the adviser to the Chair of the Presidency Mentor Group formed to provide recommendations and a roadmap to establish the university as a pre-eminent institution of learning of international repute. The mentor group chaired by Professor Sugata Bose has submitted its fourth report to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee earlier in the month.
