The Aligarh Muslim University Students' Union has demanded swift inquiry and setting up of a fast-track court to try the killers of slain DSP Zia-ul-Haq.
The students' body held a candlelight march last night on campus to express its "sense of deep anguish" over the killing of Haq by a mob in Pratapgarh on Saturday and solidarity with his wife, who is an alumnus of women's college at AMU.
In a memorandum to the Uttar Pradesh Governor, the union has demanded a time-bound inquiry into the alleged role of former food and civil supplies minister Raghuraj Pratap Singh, alias Raja Bhaiyya in the DSP's killing.
The union has demanded setting up of a fast track court to ensure that justice is meted out to those involved in the brazen killing of the police officer.
They also expressed solidarity with the slain policeman's wife Parveen Azad and demanded that she should be given adequate security in view of reported threats to her life.
Members of the union said "politicians who have a criminal background should be removed from all political parties and their membership terminated".
Friends and former colleagues of Azad described her as a "gutsy girl", who was always prepared to take a stand even in her student days here.
