The film is being directed by Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman and is based on Keith Bunin's script, which featured in 2011 Black List.
The film is headed to Berlin film market, reported Variety.
The film's story is about a widow, played by Adams, who supports her son by running a boarding house in a small town overrun by religious fervor.
Her life changes when she falls in love with Ezekiel Moss (Gyllenhaal), a mysterious drifter who can physically inhabit the spirits of the dead.
It is Hoffman's second directing gig after 'Jack Goes Boating'.
