The private airport at Andal in Burdwan district would be operational in December, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said here today.
"Andal airport will be operational in December", she said while speaking at a government programme where she distributed sops for the weaker sections of people.
She said work for NTPC's Rs 10,000-crore power plant at Katwa in Burdwan district would start soon with the problem of land for the project having been sorted out.
Banerjee said with the implementation of these two projects there would be employment for a large number of people.
Banerjee said August 14 would be celebrated as "Kanyashree Day" all over the state as part of state government's initiative to empower the girl child through the Kanyashree scheme.
Under the project, the government provides an annual scholarship of Rs.500 to girls between 13 and 18 years (class eight to class 12) to continue their studies, provided they are unmarried and their parents' annual income is below Rs.1.20 lakh.
However, the income restriction would not be applicable to those who are orphans or are physically challenged.
If a girl continues her studies up to the age of 18, a one-time grant of Rs.25,000 would be deposited in her bank account, provided she is unmarried.
According to government estimates, 14 lakh beneficiaries are being covered under the scheme since its launch in October last year.
She said that those who are yet to get the benefit under the scheme would be covered on that day" (August 14).
"I am working hard day and night for the welfare of the state and am not in the post to make money (for personal gains). I do not need money nor cars", she said and warned the partymen against wrong doing.
"I keep information about the MPs, MLAs and others who are holding the top posts in the municipalities and corporations. If I find anything wrong I take step," she said.
