A day after a boy was rescued from an abandoned borewell pit in Tirunelveli, another three-year-old boy fell into an unused deep borewell at Kidampalayam village, about 50 km from here today.
D Sujith, who was in the vicinity of the borewell alongwith some of his family members, who came there for grazing cattle, fell into it by around 5 pm while playing.
District Collector A Gnanasekaran told PTI rescue operations were in full swing and a pit parallel to the borewell was being dug to save the child.
"Four backhoe-loaders are on the job now. Fire and rescue services personnel, a medical team, an ambulance are there. We are hopeful that we will be able to rescue the child," he said.
The borewell was dug only some days ago and it was abandoned as it did not yield water.
The TVS Community College team which rescued the child from the borewell pit yesterday at Tirunelveli was also on the way to support rescue efforts, he said.
Stating that he had already held a borwell drilling contractors and ordered them to close the the wells if it did not yield water or not used, Gnansekaran said "we have also closed abandoned borewells in the district...This village is in a very remote location and as the borewell was dug only a few days ago and escaped our attention."
A three-year-old girl died on April 6 after she fell into an abandoned borewell in Villupuram district.
Following such incidents in the past, Madras High Court had directed that all borewells be properly closed or barricaded.
