Another farmer commits suicide in WB, toll rises to 9

A distressed farmer in Malda district allegedly committed suicide as he failed to repay the loans he had taken for cultivation, taking the total number of distressed farmers committing suicide in the state to nine.
30-year-old Bhabesh Ray of Hashpukuar village allegedly consumed pesticide last night. He was rushed to the local hospital which referred him to Malda Medical College Hospital, police said.
Ray died at the Malda Medical College Hospital today, the hospital authorities said.
Ray's family claimed that he had taken a loan of Rs 30,000 from a local money lender to cultivate potato and corn in his field.

They claimed that Ray was distressed as he was not getting the remunerative price for his potato cultivation and his corn cultivation suffered damage due to unseasonal rain.
The family claimed that he allegedly consumed pesticide as he was finding it difficult to repay the debt of Rs 30,000 he had taken from the local money lender.
A distressed potato farmer committed suicide at his home at Dhupguri in Jalpaiguri district yesterday after he allegedly failed to repay loans he had taken to cultivate potato.
Nritya Gopal Burman, 45, took his own life by hanging himself at his home at Nathua under Dhupguri block, the police said adding his was the first such case of suicide in north Bengal.
