McPartlin will spend a couple of months getting treatment in a rehab facility after telling his wife Lisa Armstrong and co-star Declan Donnelly about his problems, reported Digital Spy.
"The first step is to admit to yourself you need help," McPartlin said.
The TV host has been suffering from anxiety and depression, as well as chronic pain caused by a problem in his right knee - for which he started taking the prescription meds.
"I feel like I have let a lot of people down and for that I am truly sorry. I want to thank my wife, family and closest friends for helping me through this really difficult time.
