Born on April 3, 1914 at Amritsar, Manekshaw was the first Field Marshal of the Indian Army and is credited for the Indian victory in the 1971 Bangladesh war.
Inaugurating the statue, Gen Bikram Singh credited Manekshaw for creating "a country on the globe in 13 days" in form of Bangladesh in 1971.
The Army Chief urged the officers to follow Manekshaw who, he said, had the conviction of telling the political leadership about the right time of starting the war when he was asked to move into action immediately.
The Army Chief also released a book 'Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw - The Man and His Times'.
The event was attended by Maja Daruwalla, daughter of the legendary leader, accompanied by her husband.
As part of the ongoing centenary celebrations a number of events were organised at Ooty and Coonor, the place where he chose to spend his last days.
The Field Marshal passed away on June 27, 2008 at the age of 94.
