Four alert jawans on duty at a mooring station of the Army's 'Inland Water Transport' operational unit of engineers near Dakshineswar, saved a drowning man from Hooghly river, officials said today.
Nagesh Singh, a driver from Barrackpore, had fallen off Bally Bridge near Dakshineswar temple on Sunday.
The jawans - Naik U B Jadhav, Lance Havildar B R Patil, Sapper Vipin Kumar and Naik P J Kadam - who were on duty nearby, noticed a drowning man feebly shouting for help in the fast flowing river.
The Army men launched a survey boat anchored nearby and manoeuvring the craft against the high tide currents, the jawans managed to hold the drowning man who had given up hopes, they officials said.
He was later revived, given first aid and food. The man said he was a driver and had accidentally fallen into the river.
