Egyptian army killed 14 terrorists and destroyed a number of hideouts used by the militants in the restive North Sinai region, a top military official said today.
The army destroyed five shelters and a number of hideouts, five vehicles used by terrorists in a heavy exchange of fire with the militants.
The army operations are part of a retaliatory campaign by the army to avenge last month's attack that killed 12 soldiers in North Sinai.
Egypt has witnessed several terrorist attacks targeting policemen, judges and military personnel in different parts of the country in recent years.
Since the 2011 revolution that topped then-president Hosni Mubarak, North Sinai, which is the base of a number of extremists and outlaw groups, became the main stage of many violent attacks by terrorists.
The attacks increased after the ouster of then-Islamist president Mohamed Morsi in 2013 following massive protests against his rule.
More than 700 security personnel have been killed since then.
The military has launched security campaigns in the area, arrested suspects and demolished houses that belong to terrorists, including those facilitating tunnels leading to the Gaza Strip.
