Arun Dhumal, younger son of former Himachal Pradesh chief minister Prem Kumar Dhumal, questioned how the income from the orchard of Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh rose "phenomenally" when he was a Cabinet minister at the Centre.
Addressing reporters here, Arun Dhumal distributed the copies of the original and revised income returns of Virbhadra Singh for 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 and questioned how the income, which was in a few lakhs in original Income Tax returns, increased to crores of rupees.
The income regained its old level of lakhs of rupees in 2011-12, he said.
In his original income tax returns for 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11, Virbhadra mentioned his aggregate income as Rs 23,73,938, Rs 59,67,584 and Rs 40,13,712 respectively, but in revised returns, the incomes increased to Rs 2.37 crore, Rs 3.25 crore and Rs 1.70 crore respectively.
However, in 2006-07, his aggregate income was Rs 22,56,809 and 2011-12 also it came down to about Rs 25 lakh, he said.
Arun Dhumal said Virbhadra Singh owes an answer to the public as to how his income increased and LIC policies of crores of rupees were purchased in the name of family members during the same period.
The leader of BJP in Rajya Sabha, Arun Jaitley, had raised the issue on the eve of assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh in October/November 2012.
